APAC/AAPAR
APAC (Adapted Physical Activity Council) is a council
within the American Association for Physical Activity and
Recreation (AAPAR) -- the newest association of AAHPERD
(American Alliance for Health, Physical Education Recreation
and Dance). The council, which was previously a part of the
American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness (AAALF),
focused on providing continuing education for physical educators
and adapted physical educators serving school-aged students primarily
in schools. The merger of AAALF and the American Association
for Leisure and Recreation (AALR) promotes the expansion of focus
for APAC to look beyond the walls of the school building into
the community. Activities in the past have included adapted
sport programs, but the mission of AAPAR embraces community-based
programs and clearly encourages support of professionals working
in transition and community programs, as well as those working
in schools.
AAPAR's Adapted Physical Activity Council promotes both practical
and theoretical endeavors in the areas of physical activity,
recreation and sport for individuals with disabilities that will
lead to active lifestyles and healthful qualities of life. The
council advocates and encourages programs, policies, standards,
and research that will positively affect opportunities for physical
activity and recreation available to individuals with disabilities.
Through this council, AAPAR promotes excellence in professional
practices and preparation by sponsoring presentations and activities
designed to foster the professional growth of practitioners working
with individuals with disabilities in schools and communities.
The Council also seeks to provide a unified base for cooperative
interdisciplinary services for individuals with disabilities.
