North American Riding for the Handicapped Association
(NARHA) promotes and supports therapeutic horseback riding
programs throughout the United States and Canada. This non-profit
association is composed of more than 500 riding centers. More
than 28,000 riders with disabilities benefit from therapeutic
horseback riding activities at NARHA centers.
Physical Education Central is an award-winning
web site on the Internet designed for physical educators, classroom
teachers, and parents. The intent of the site is to provide the
latest information about contemporary developmentally appropriate
physical education programs for children and youth. Resources
on the site include: physical education, health, and classroom
lesson ideas; ready-to-print assessments; adapted physical education
information; an online bookstore; job announcements and information;
links to top instructional sport web sites; and weekly kids quotes
and wellness ideas. PE Central is maintained by the Health and
Physical Education Program at Virginia Tech.
ABLEDATA is a national database of information
on assistive technology and rehabilitation equipment available
from domestic and international sources. ABLEDATA contains information
on more than 24,000 assistive technology products, from white
canes to voice output programs. The database contains detailed
descriptions of each product, including price and company information.
The database also contains information on non-commercial prototypes,
customized and one-of-a kind products, and do-it-yourself designs.
To select devices most appropriate to your needs, ABLEDATA suggests
using their information along with professional advice, product
evaluations, and hands-on product trials.
Infinitec Inc. is a U.S. non-profit corporation
formed to help people with disabilities and their families access
life-enhancing technology. Infinitec is a joint effort of United
Cerebral Palsy Associations Inc., Washington, DC, and United Cerebral
Palsy Association of greater Chicago. Infinitec Inc. builds on
technology-access programs offered by UCP affiliates around the
nation, including a UCPA Chicago program. The mission of Infinitec
Inc. is to help people with disabilities, their families, and
their communities gain access to the full range of technology
options at affordable cost. By enabling people with disabilities
to enjoy significantly enhanced, lifelong access to technology,
Infinitec Inc. aims to promote a profound shift in the ways that
people with disabilities along with their families and neighbors
live and interact.
The
SCI Ring is a collection of web sites that share a common
interest in spinal cord injury. All members of the ring have a
graphic logo and a link to other ring members. Included are resources,
news, research, and experiences regarding spinal cord injury.
Disabilities Information Resources (DINF)is a new online resource with its primary focus to
supply up-to-date news and information for researchers, businesses
seeking compliance information, legislative bodies, people with
disabilities, and people working in the disability field. The
data provided on the DINF site is collected from key conferences
on disability-related subjects, organizations that focus on the
subject, and Internet-based resources. To ensure high quality
and relevance, the DINF site is monitored by a review board consisting
of international experts from around the world.
The Institute on Independent Living serves self-help
organizations for people with disabilities who work for equal
opportunities, self-determination, and self-respect. They provide
information, training materials and technical help on personal
assistance, advocacy, accessibility, legislation, and peer support.
They also publish articles, reports, manuals or comments and other
materials related to independent living.
For 20 years, the staff of the National Rehabilitation
Information Center (NARIC) has collected and disseminated
the results of federally funded research projects. NARIC's literature
collection, which also includes commercially published books,
journal articles, and audiovisuals, averages around 200 new documents
per month. NARIC is funded by the National Institute on Disability
and Rehabilitation Research to serve anyone, professional or lay
person, who is interested in disability and rehabilitation, including
consumers, family members, health professionals, educators, rehabilitation
counselors, students, librarians, administrators, and researchers.
The Coaches Forum's Mission is to provide a
forum for athletics coaches, athletes, and administrators worldwide
to communicate and share information across disability groups.
The idea for the Coaches Forum came from coaches during
the IPC World Championships in Birmingham, England, in the summer
of 1998. Discussions regarding improvements in the sharing of
ideas and communication regarding sport across continents led
to this independent organization. All information (including their
Newsletter) is done via e-mail.
Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit therapeutic horseback
riding program, located in Huntington, New York, that "brings
remarkable benefits to those with disabilities by stretching
both mind and muscles. For someone who can't walk, see, communicate,
etc., riding a horse allows this individual to experience a new
sense of freedom - transported to where dreams come true and spirits
soar!"
Disability International Foundation (dif) is
a charitable, nonprofit educational organization established in
1991, growing from local projects to a program thrust of the national
YMCA and BEH Special Projects with interagency collaboration.
Dif's spin-off was a natural outcome of work on disability issues.
Goals of dif are to provide, assist and/or coordinate educational
activities and learning experiences; offer training opportunities
for individuals affected directly or indirectly by disabilities;
provide and coordinate consultation services to individuals, groups,
and organizations; develop and disseminate materials in support
of training; meet other educational, service and employment needs
regarding disabilities; and coordinate activities with individuals
and groups providing services to those with disabilities.
The Olympic and Sport Studies Centre is located

The Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS)
is a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance
the quality of life for all individuals who have Down syndrome.
The Society accomplishes this mission by providing information
and assistance, by advocating on behalf of individuals with Down
syndrome in the areas of education, employment and health care,
and by providing networking opportunities for parents and professionals

The National Hydrocephalus Foundation (NHF) was
incorporated in 1980 as a voluntary, not-for-profit public
service organization to assemble and disseminate information pertaining
to hydrocephalus, its treatments and outcomes; to establish and

individuals; to help others gain understanding of areas affected
by hydrocephalus, such as education, insurance, tax and estate
planning, employment and family; to increase public awareness;

The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability
(NCPAD) encourages persons with disabilities to engage in
regular physical activity so as to maintain good health and prevent
the development of secondary conditions. NCPAD disseminates research
on physical activity and disability for persons with disabilities,
fitness and exercise professionals, health professionals, and
researchers through its website searchable database of adapted
physical activity programs by state, adapted equipment vendors,
and conferences, as well as references to journal articles, books,
newsletters, and internet resources. NCPAD produces fact sheets
and monographs on disabilities, physical activity, and adapted
sports, and is currently developing exercise modules which will
