The mission of the Lakeshore Foundation is to
raise, manage, and distribute funds and other resources to support
activities, programs, or projects that encourage independence
through enhancing the lifestyles and community participation of
individuals who have experienced physical disability.
The Lakeshore Foundation SuperSports Program
exists to provide sports and recreation opportunities for
children with physical disabilities. Super Sports allows a child
to maximize his or her life potential through various sports and
recreation activities. This program provides significant skill
development, socialization, competition, and goal- oriented recreation
opportunities for children to get past their immediate disabilities,
and push their physical and cognitive skills. The intent of the
program is to introduce new activities, teach skills, and provide
a continuum of programs to enable a child to progress at different
levels.
For more than 15 years, Lakeshore Foundation
has been helping people with physical disabilities explore avenues
toward rewarding lives, creating opportunities to excel in all
areas of life: work, education, family, recreation, leisure, and
more. Lakeshore Foundation serves men and women, children
and adults, who have experienced a wide range of conditions including
arthritis, MS, spinal cord injury, strokes, amputations, head

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is
an independent federal agency making recommendations to the President
and Congress on issues affecting 54 million Americans with disabilities.
NCD is composed of 15 members appointed by the President and confirmed
by the U.S. Senate. In 1986 NCD first proposed that Congress should
enact a civil rights law for people with disabilities. In 1990,
the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. NCD's
overall purpose is to promote policies, programs, practices, and
procedures that guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals
with disabilities, regardless of the nature or severity of disability;
and to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic
self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration
into all aspects of society.
The U.S. Access Board, also known as the Architectural
and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board, was created
in 1973 to serve the nation as the only independent federal agency
whose primary mission is accessibility for people with disabilities.
The Board develops accessibility guidelines and standards under
the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Architectural Barriers
Act, as well as the Telecommunications Act. Enforcement, technical
assistance, training, and publications concerning these areas
are offered by this agency.

DisabilityCentral.com is a new website that
provides a virtual gathering place for people with disabilities.
According to a study by a leading disability research center,
less than 10% of Americans with disabilities use the Internet.
DisabilityCentral.com hopes to increase these numbers by
providing a unique, easy-to-use Internet site to help expand knowledge,
experience, and friendships. Dr. Linda Stein, Director of DisabilityCentral.com,
sees the Internet as an equalizer for individuals with disabilities,
"...because one is not judged on appearances over the Internet."
Recently launched @ctivTeen, part of Disability Central's
site, is a project managed by and for teens with disabilities.
