Providing Disability Sport Opportunities in Adapted Physical Education

This article,written by Nancy Megginson and Barry Lavay, provides recommendations for developing disability sport competence in practitioners and professors/instructors of adapted physical education. Extending the continuum of disability sport opportunities, including mainstreamed and/or disability-specific sport, in school-based physical education programming can facilitate self-worth/confidence through physical skill competence, socialization, lifetime leisure skills, and healthy lifestyle choices of individuals with disabilities.

Viabilité - A New Initiative, A New Identity

Since 1989, the Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability has promoted inclusive physical activity opportunities in a variety of service settings. In 1999, the Alliance underwent a comprehensive strategic planning process, which resulted in a new vision. This vision, labeled Viabilité, foresaw a 20% decrease in physical inactivity of persons with disabilities. The specific action plan of this initiative is still evolving, but already a number of strategies have been proposed. This plan is reviewed by David Legg, along with a rationale and history leading to its creation.
